Self Ligating Braces Overview

The difference between self-ligating braces and traditional metal or clear braces is that the self ligating braces do not have colored elastics to hold in the wire.  Each bracket is designed to hold the wire into place by a built in mechanism in order to eliminate the need for elastic ties to hold the wire into the bracket.  Self-ligating braces can treat  jaw alignment issues, crowded or spaced teeth, under or over bites, crooked, and protruding smiles. Having braces can impact your teeth and oral health for the rest of your life, give your teeth the room they deserve, improve speech impediments, and much more. It truly is more than just creating a beautiful smile.  If you would like to learn more about self-ligating braces, we recommend that you come in for a private consultation in our Prosper, TX office at your earliest convenience.

About Self Ligating Braces

Made of stainless steel (like traditional metal braces) or a clear ceramic, your new self-ligating braces will straighten your teeth with a built-in clip that holds the archwire in place. Not having an elastic to hold the archwire in place means less friction in your mouth, a decrease in the amount of pressure on the teeth, and more comfort to you in treatment. Self-ligating braces also offer quicker teeth movement (about 6 months faster) compared to conventional braces and fewer appointments in our office. Once the self-ligating braces are placed on the teeth, the patient will have to return every 8 to 10 weeks for adjustments.

What to Expect from Self Ligating Braces

Each patient will require their own personalized treatment plan. Our orthodontic assistant will cleanse and air dry the teeth before the braces application begins. Then, we will put on a bonding agent on each tooth and Dr. Bietsch will position each bracket to the precise location needed for each tooth. A light then cures the glue attaching  the bracket to the tooth and a precisely cut wire is placed in the braces. The clips that hold the wire into the bracket are then closed. The process of putting the braces on is a fast, painless process.

Aftercare for Self Ligating Braces

Once the braces are placed, soreness from the teeth not being moved before is normal for approximately the first week.  Everyone is a little different and some patients only feel discomfort only for the first couple of days.  Taking ibuprofen as indicated usually is best to offset the soreness.  We will also give you a list of foods that are good to eat with braces and those that can give your braces problems.  Although not everything is on the list of foods to avoid, a general rule is to avoid anything that is hard, sticky or chewy.

Brushing after every meal will ensure that food debris is not sitting on the teeth throughout the day (or on the braces), which will promote tooth decay and gum disease.  Flossing is imperative on a daily basis to keep the gums and teeth healthy throughout treatment.  Keeping all your orthodontic appointments, plus regular dental cleanings and check-ups with your dentist is also key in the health of your smile.

After your orthodontic treatment is completed, we will remove the braces from your teeth and fit you for a retainer.  Dr. Bietsch will discuss the best retainer option for you as a retainer will help keep your teeth in their new position.
