Dentofacial orthopedics is a specialty of dentistry sanctioned by the American Dental Association, which Dr. Bietsch studied an extra 2 years for in a dentofacial orthopedic specialist residency program. With this specialization, he could diagnose misalignments and abnormalities in the facial structures and treat them with oral appliances, such as head gear, expanders, and face masks.

About the Treatment

Dentofacial orthopedic is a way to guide the bones into proper growth before malocclusion becomes a permanent skeletal concern. There may be a noticeable imbalance in the way the jaw or teeth are positioned in the mouth as early as the age of 4–7 . Because the facial bones are still growing, children are excellent candidates for this treatment because the jaw can be shaped and aligned before it becomes a bigger problem to correct.

What to Expect

After a complete assessment of the patient's facial abnormalities and misalignments in the teeth and jaw, Dr. Bietsch will design a treatment plan for the patient that meets all their needs. Every patient will have their own prescribed treatment, with or without an orthodontic appliance. Our team will educate the young patient and their parent/guardian on how to properly care for the appliance and answer questions about the treatment plan so that everyone is on the same page.

Aftercare for Dentofacial Orthopedics

Once you have your treatment plan and the orthodontic appliance is in place, it is best to keep all your follow-up appointments so that proper documentation can be made in charting the progress of the bone movement and alignment. If the orthodontic appliance is not fitting properly, needs replaced, is lost, or is not working, we want you to call our office to make an emergency appointment. It is crucial that every patient has a working appliance so that treatment is not disrupted.
