Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, your braces are off, and your smile is better than ever, you will need to wear a retainer to ensure that your teeth stay in their new position. At BIETSCH Orthodontics, we offer our patients removable or fixed retainers to make sure that the time and money you invested in orthodontics is not wasted by keeping the teeth in their ideal positions. Dr. Bietsch wants to prevent your teeth from relapse after braces and it may take some time for your teeth to adjust after treatment. He will discuss with you how long, how often, and what time of day you should be wearing your retainer (if it is removable). Of course, the number of your in-office appointments will decrease once the braces are off your teeth, but you will need to have regular check-ups with Dr. Bietsch as suggested. We want to help all our patients at BIETSCH Orthodontics maintain that gorgeous, new smile, and retainers provide excellent alignment support for your teeth. If you would like to learn more about retainers or need a retainer replaced, please call and schedule an appointment at our office in Prosper, TX.

About the Procedure
At our office, we offer our patients three different types of retainers based on the patient's needs: a Hawley retainer, clear retainer, or a fixed retainer. A Hawley retainer (the most common type of retainer) is molded for the roof of the mouth (for the top arch) and the backs of the teeth (for the bottom arch), and is made up of molded acrylic, and wires. A clear retainer is inconspicuously worn just like an Invisalign aligner and can be removed from the mouth very easily. A fixed retainer cannot be taken out of the mouth because it is bonded to the back of the teeth.
What to Expect
Once you have your braces removed from your teeth, you can be fitted for your retainer. We will do an impression of your mouth post-orthodontic treatment and send it off to a dental laboratory to be made. Once your retainer is ready at our office (approximately 1 – 2 weeks later), we will schedule a fitting appointment. Dr. Bietsch will make sure that the retainer fits appropriately before sending you home with it.
Retainers, with proper maintenance and regular inspections, should last a very long time. Of course, the material can wear over time and replacement retainers may be needed. In the meantime, a patient with retainers should keep them clean and safely stored when not in use. Retainers are easy to maintain and can be brushed with your toothbrush and regular toothpaste unless otherwise directed.
