The last thing the star athletes in your family need to worry about is his or her mouth guard while at practice or during a big play on game day. At BIETSCH Orthodontics in Prosper, TX, Dr. Tom Bietsch and our team take pride in providing our patients with customized mouth guards for our sports-minded patients. If you invest in orthodontic treatments, it is best to protect that investment with a properly-fitting guard.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that athletes wear a mouth guard while participating in practice or competition during:
- Martial arts
- Snow sports (skiing and snowboarding)
- Track and Field
- Water sports (water polo, surfing, diving)
At BIETSCH Orthodontics, we can help protect you or your child's teeth and gums during extra-curricular activities. Call our office today if you are ready to discuss having a custom mouth guard made to protect your smile.
Custom vs. Store Bought
What is the difference between buying a store-bought mouth guard and one from the orthodontist office? It has the same function, right? Not really. You may be able to go to any sporting goods store, purchase a mouth guard right off the shelf and be on your way to practice or a game. It is convenient to buy a generic mouth guard, however you are buying a one-size-fits-all guard to protect your teeth (and possibly your braces), which you have made a significant investment in time and money.
A custom-made athletic mouth guard is designed specifically to fit and protect your mouth. When you wear your metal braces, aligners, or other orthodontic appliance, you need a mouth guard that will fit over your teeth and your corrective gear. Off-the-shelf mouth guards just won't do the best job when covering your teeth during contact sports if you are wearing braces. Many of our patients also say that an ill-fitting mouth guard rubs their teeth and gums the wrong way, which is distracting during their activities. Dr. Bietsch understands how important it is to select the right protective gear for your sport and a mouth guard should be comfortable and fitted to safeguard your teeth from injury and trauma.
About Mouth Guards
Our office makes custom-made mouth guards that won't tear the gums, are comfortable to wear for longer periods of time (and is easy to breath in), and properly fitted to our patient's mouth.
What to Expect
All our athletic mouth guards are made of high-quality materials. Once the guard is made, you will come in for a fitting to make sure it has the right fit and proper bite. We suggest that you start this process before your sports season, so you can be covered without delay.
Keeping your athletic mouth guard clean and safely stored should be a #1 priority after each wear. You can use your toothbrush and normal toothpaste to clean your mouth guard. Rinse it off with cold water (never submerge in hot water) to keep it from developing a deformity. We ask that you bring your mouth guard with you to each orthodontic appointment so that we can inspect it for wear and tear and make recommendations as to when to replace it. We also suggest that an athletic mouth guard be replaced once a season, especially if you grind your teeth while participating in the sport.
